Job Description:

W.W. Norton & Company is seeking a Director of Engineering. The Director of Engineering will manage the engineering teams responsible for building Norton’s web-based products. They will coordinate engineering activities to design, develop, forecast, and improve processes. Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Ensure timely, accurate, and quality execution of all deliverables
  • Work with Product Owners, Project Management, User Experience, and Quality Assurance teams to align priorities and deliverables
  • Work with the Solution Architect to ensure flexible and scalable system/software architecture and designs.
  • Develop strong lines of communication between Engineering and Product teams, ensuring that the right feedback gets incorporated in development conversation
  • Help facilitate problem solving across teams and groups
  • Manage teams by clearly outlining titles, roles and responsibilities
  • Set Goals and Targets for team members on regular basis
  • Develop a culture of autonomy, ownership, accountability and innovation across the team
  • Conduct regular check-ins and 1-1s with team members
  • Think critically about the long-term career development of team members
  • Ensure software meets all requirements of quality, security, modifiability, extensibility etc.
  • Develop and implement web standards across multiple technologies
  • Evaluate technology vendors/suppliers, negotiate agreements, and establish working relationships to push our product strategy forward.

 

Experience and Skills:

  • 10+ years of hands-on professional software development experience in building and maintaining a high-performance, reliable, secure, distributed, and scaleable enterprise production environment
  • 5+ years of experience leading teams and examples of people development and career advancement
  • Solid experience and proven track record in leading engineering teams to deliver consumer products
  • Ability to think strategically and make recommendations considering technology, resources and time
  • Proven success leading teams of technology professionals in multiple locations and managing complex inter-team dependencies
  • Experience rapidly scaling an engineering team while maintaining high quality
  • Be technology agnostic and intellectually curious
  • Demonstrate the ability to master new/emerging technologies and take initiative to offer technical direction and creative solutions.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Strong experience in the agile software development methodology.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, define timetables, balance multiple priorities, and manage parallel projects to completion
  • Excellent debugging and troubleshooting skills
  • Aware of web standards, their purpose, benefits and appropriateness
  • Experience in decomposing existing monolithic legacy applications into microservices
  • Thorough understanding of building RESTful services, SOA, Micro Services System Architecture
  • Strong knowledge of NoSQL databases such as MongoDB, Redis, and MySQL, SQL Server PostgreSQL
  • Extensive experience in building enterprise-level systems with multiple of the following: HTML5, vanilla Javascript (ES6), CSS3, jQuery, Node JS, Express JS, Bootstrap, ReactJs/Redux, PHP, Python, Java
  • Experience using Linux operating system, Apache, nginx, GIT
  • Experience with Continuous Integration and automated testing strategies.
  • Experience with AWS Cloud Services, Docker, Kubernates
  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent work experience
  • Must be able to work in the United States for any employer.
  • Must be able to work regular business hours in Norton’s New York City Office.
