Job Description:

W. W. Norton & Company is seeking an organized, diplomatic, and innovative leader to manage Ebook Production staff and projects in our Digital Publishing Team. Ebook Production is responsible for the making of Norton’s college, high school, and custom ebooks. The manager supervises and mentors staff, implements production and revision protocols for Norton’s digital textbooks, oversees project management, and communicates status to other teams across Norton’s College Department. Norton is a highly-collaborative company, and the job involves daily teamwork with college textbook production, metadata, distribution, design, editorial and project editorial, marketing, ecommerce, support, and product colleagues—often in a consultative role. Strong candidates will have excellent project management experience, demonstrate empathy and positive leadership in a busy environment, and inspire confidence through clear and honest communication. They will also be forward-thinking and able to play an active stakeholder role in the future evolution of Norton’s digital products, production tools, and processes. This position reports to the Director of Digital Publishing.

Essential Job Responsibilities Include:

  • Manage and cultivate staff responsible for ebook production
  • Oversee ebook production and QA workflows, work assignments, and scheduling from project launches to timely delivery, including the creation of sample and marketing content
  • Report on project status at regular interdepartmental meetings
  • Oversee Ebook Production staff’s coordination with Metadata, Distribution, Ecommerce, and Website Operations teams to set up ebook products for sale
  • Oversee Ebook Production staff’s coordination with customer support teams and retail channels to troubleshoot and solve ebook content problems
  • Maintain ebook production documentation, specifications, and best practices based on latest industry standards (in particular, W3C specifications such as EPUB 3.2)
  • Advocate for user-centered design and uphold accessibility principles in the production of ebook content
  • Collaborate and strategize with editorial teams to execute Norton’s vision for exceptional-quality digital textbooks that promote student success
  • Work with Custom and Institutional Sales teams to plan the creation and setup of custom ebook products
  • Advise the Director of Digital Publishing and other leaders in the Digital Product Group to align production practices with digital product goals
  • Advise in the discovery and implementation of Digital Asset Management systems
  • Be a steward for Ebook Production by advocating for process and product improvements in partnership with Product, Production, Design, Editorial, and Project Editorial leaders
  • Be an educator and communicator to all colleagues, to promote understanding and confidence in ebook publishing
  • Manage ebook conversion partner billing and relationships

Experience and Skills:

  • Employment eligibility to work with W.W. Norton & Company in the US is required
  • Must be able to work full business hours
  • 3 or more years of project management experience in ebooks or related technologies (experience with digital-first ebook production is especially desired)
  • 2 or more years of staff management experience, preferably in teams of 3 or more
  • Strong working knowledge of HTML and CSS, following proper structural semantics
  • Fluent in the latest EPUB 3 specifications published by the W3C, and working knowledge of how standards differ across retail platforms (e.g., Amazon)
  • Ability to implement accessibility specifications in digital content (WCAG, ARIA, EPUB Accessibility)
  • Current knowledge of emerging ebook and digital publishing standards (e.g., Publication Manifest)
  • Comfortable with EPUB validation and EPUBCheck, troubleshooting and solving validation errors
  • Working knowledge of Digital Asset Management platforms and software version control systems like Git (GitHub, GitLab, etc.) is highly desired
  • Familiarity with the Adobe Creative Cloud, especially InDesign, is highly desired
  • Confident using Jira, Sharepoint, FileMaker, SmartSheet, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft Office, or similar tools
  • Willingness to embrace new technologies and change
  • Demonstrated understanding of the digital publishing industry and its challenges
