Job Description:

W. W. Norton is seeking a Copyright and Permissions Specialist for its Contracts Department. This employee will work closely with the Contracts Director, Permissions Manager, Senior Contracts Manager, Contracts Associates/Assistants and other departments.

Essential Job Responsibilities Include:

  • Research and review contracts in connection with providing copyright lines for titles
  • Obtain Cataloging-in-Publication Data from the Library of Congress
  • Register published works with the Copyright Office of the Library of Congress
  • Research copyright status of published works
  • Support Permissions Manager by granting permissions for Norton’s published titles: Analyze contracts and research rights status; respond to requests; set permissions fees and draft permissions agreements

Experience and Skills:

  • Employment eligibility to work with W. W. Norton & Company in the U.S.
  • Must be able to work full business hours from Norton’s New York City Headquarters. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are temporarily providing employees the option to work remotely

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Strong writing skills
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of book publishing experience
  • Familiarity with copyright statute, registration process, fundamentals of permissions licensing in publishing context
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to effectively prioritize
  • Ability to work independently
  • Close attention to detail and excellent organization
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Strong computer skills, particularly in MS Office
