Job Description:

W. W. Norton & Company is seeking a DevOps Manager to join its fully remote Digital Products group. Independent since 1923, employee-owned, and proud to publish "books that live," Norton is dedicated to building inclusive learning experiences for higher education and high school. The DevOps Manager will help solve problems and manage a small global team of DevOps engineers. This position will report to the Director of Engineering, who also oversees application engineering.

Essential Job Responsibilities Include:

  • Grow and manage a small but global team of DevOps engineers and specialists.
  • Evangelize DevOps principles across all Digital Product departments.
  • Manage the DevOps issue board, ensuring that tasks are well defined and completed in a timely fashion.
  • Buffer your team against day-to-day interruptions.
  • Help automate, monitor, and streamline operations.
  • Guide the design and development of the Digital Product group’s AWS-based infrastructure.
  • Drive adoption of new tools that help improve the processes for daily scrum development.
  • Own and define the process for operational change management and systems migrations.
  • Work closely with the Engineering Manager to cultivate good software development and design practices.
  • Onboard new staff and own the documentation for our operational systems.

Experience and Skills:

As an experienced lead or manager, former developer, system admin, or solutions architect, you know the complete development stack for modern web-based applications in and out and are excited to help others grow in their roles.

  • 5+ years of production DevOps experience in a cloud environment (AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.).
  • 2+ years of experience mentoring, leading, or managing others.
  • Excellent capacity for communicating technical information to non-technical colleagues.
  • Deep understanding of development practices and tools, such as agile and git strategies.
  • Extensive experience with Linux systems and the command line.
  • Strong familiarity with Kubernetes orchestration and container-based application management.
  • Proficient with virtualized networking best practices, such as how to configure AWS VPCs.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation tools and management of infrastructure as code.
  • Knowledgeable of common practices for database administration and general information security.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Highly disciplined and self-motivated.
  • Must be able to work full business hours. If candidate is not in the EDT time zone, must be able to accommodate EDT working hours.
