Job Description:
W.W. Norton & Company has an opening for an Associate Art
Director in their award-winning Trade Art Department. Come join a
growing and energized team where you can work on prizewinning books
with a group of industry leading creatives. The Associate Art Director
will be responsible for managing, art directing, and designing
approximately 8-11 titles per season from the trade hardcover list.
They will also provide support for the team in all areas of the
publishing process. Candidates must have an excellent portfolio which
include book covers and have an understanding and passion for the book
publishing process. Candidates must be exhibit attention to detail, a
critical eye for design, and have excellent communication and
organization skills. We’re looking to bring in a passionate designer
who is looking to push the boundaries of their creativity and make
their mark in the publishing landscape. This position is a full-time
remote position with a requirement to come into the New York office at
least once per publishing season for a week of meetings and
interdepartmental collaboration. This position reports directly to the
Creative Director of the Trade Department.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Manage the full design process from launch to pre-press for their
own list of approximately 8-11 trade hardcover titles per list
(24-33 per year) across the Norton and Liveright imprints spanning
poetry, fiction, and non-fiction.
- Art direct freelance designers and designing original covers from
their own list. It’s the responsibility of the Associate Art
Director, in collaboration with the Creative Director, to determine
the split of work freelanced out and work designed by themselves.
- Meet weekly and seasonal deadlines which involve presenting their
work for approval in art meetings.
- Work with the Trade Art Studio Manager and Art Rights Coordinator
to ensure good practices with font and art right clearances.
- Provide support and collaboration to design and art direction
staff when needed or as designated by the Creative Director.
- Maintain clear communication with editorial and production staff
on a regular basis.
