Job Description:

W.W. Norton & Company, Inc. is seeking an Editorial Assistant to join its College Media Editorial Department. This is a full-time, entry level position based out of Norton’s headquarters in NYC.

Essential Job Responsibilities Include:

  • Management of manuscripts through all stages of production.
  • Professionally interacting with colleagues in media and print editorial, production, marketing, and permissions to relay messages, follow-up on requests/information and in general, anticipating when to proactively act on messages.
  • Professionally interacting with authors, college faculty, and production vendors.
  • Administrative management: organizing and maintaining files with many versions; tracking manuscripts and reviews; drafting contracts; drafting memos; etc.
  • Tracking and processing payments.
  • Managing text and photo permissions with authors and the contracts department.
  • Creating and editing Excel and Word documents to support projects and/or office responsibilities.
  • Line editing manuscripts and contributing to overall publishing strategy of individual titles.
  • Managing projects in all stages of editorial development.
  • Clearly documenting and communicating updates with all team members throughout the duration of a project.
  • Maintaining and organizing digital files on appropriate servers.
  • Creating product records and metadata and ensuring accuracy of product information in W. W. Norton’s various proprietary systems.
  • Helping to plan, develop, and implement pedagogically useful and innovative content to be used in digital resources for teaching, learning, and assessment.
  • Creating budgets and development timelines to correspond with editorial, sales, and production schedules and the needs of the market.
  • Balancing many unique projects occurring simultaneously.

Experience and Skills:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Employment eligibility to work with W.W. Norton & Company in the US is required.
  • Must be able to work from Norton’s New York City Headquarters.
  • Subject matter knowledge of science is preferred, but not required. Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in the challenges and opportunities of electronic media as it applies to teaching and learning in the humanities.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communications skills.
  • Must be able to anticipate needs and deliver timely, relevant solutions and actions.
  • Must be able to develop rapport and relationships with all levels of employees.
  • Must be seen as knowledgeable and capable of handling sensitive, critical information.
  • Must be proactive, flexible and adaptive in a rapidly changing environment and adjust with a "can-do" attitude.
  • Must be self-directed and independent.
  • Must be comfortable managing complex schedules with multiple authors, dependencies, deadlines.
  • Must have good time management skills, be organized, and be capable of multi-tasking across departments, activities, and projects.
  • Must be detail-oriented, making sure that all aspects of their daily activities are handled with accuracy, with minimal mistakes.
  • Mastery of email and calendar management tools required, specifically Outlook.
  • Proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Proficiency with Photoshop and InDesign a plus.

Currently available benefits include:

  • Annual compensation for this position is $48,000. All salaries and salary ranges posted by Norton may vary depending on experience, skills, location, and like considerations.
