Job Description:

W. W. Norton & Company is seeking an Engineering Manager to help build resilient teams and platforms within our fully remote Digital Products team. Independent since 1923, employee-owned, and proud to publish "books that live," Norton is dedicated to building inclusive learning experiences for higher education and high school.

You will play a critical role in modernizing our architecture by working across two teams: the team that manages our legacy monolith, and our internal developer platform team, whose mission is to empower product teams to build, ship, and monitor with substantial autonomy, security, and reliability. As the engineering manager across the teams, you will identify gaps across our horizontals, help coordinate work across teams, grow and support engineers, drive quality standards, align the teams to organizational goals, and manage the delivery and relationships with our partner contractors. This position reports to the Director of Engineering.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, support, and grow a diverse team of engineers (software, reliability/DevOps, security, database, platform).
  • Design and continuously improve systems of work to set up engineers for success.
  • Partner with product managers to define goals, metrics, and a shared sense of ownership.
  • Build trust with stakeholders, managers, and engineers across the product and engineering organizations.
  • Manage partnerships with contractor organizations to ensure their engineering quality and practices meet expectations.
  • Drive work to address both technical and process debt on your teams.
  • Ensure a great developer experience within Norton’s engineering platform.
  • Triage internal tickets for the platform team, assigning work to appropriate engineers and seeing work through to maintain our commitment to stakeholder product teams.

Experience and Skills:

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience as an individual contributor on an engineering team.
  • 2+ years of experience managing engineering teams.
  • Capable of solving almost any technical problem on your own, but a preference for guiding others to solve them.
  • Evangelist for usability and developer experience. You combine the best of design thinking and systems thinking to build products and platforms that engineers love to use.
  • A great product sense, with experience leading projects from beginning to end in collaboration with other engineers and stakeholders.
  • Self-directed, with a bias toward action. You live to build new things and thrive in ambiguity.
  • Expertise in one aspect of our core developer platform stack, and bonus points for more: Terraform, GitLab CI/CD, and Node.js web applications hosted on Kubernetes in AWS.
  • Employment eligibility to work in the US is required.
  • Must be able to work full business hours. If not in the EST time zone, must be able to accommodate EDT working hours.
  • Bachelor’s degree

Currently available benefits:

  • Annual compensation for this position is $120,000-$170,000. All salaries and salary ranges posted by Norton may vary depending on experience, skills, location and like considerations.
  • Generous paid time off, paid holidays, and summer Friday afternoons beginning in July
  • Generous health benefits, including PPO and EPO medical insurance options, vision insurance, dental insurance, flexible spending accounts for healthcare, dependent care and commuter, gym membership reimbursement, and more. Coverage for spouses, domestic partners, and dependent children is available.
  • Profit-Sharing and 401(k) benefit plan with discretionary contribution matching by employer
  • Disability and life insurances
  • FMLA, parental and other leave
  • Employee Assistance Program (for mental health, financial planning, and other needs)
  • Company-provided laptop
  • Employee discounts on Norton books
  • Limited matching of employee donations to select non-profit organizations
